..the content..

The content group, Fan Fan, Natacha, Martin and myself, had a little brainstorm on Friday, in search for a stronger link between the harp (physical) and the wall projection (visual). There were a lot of good ideas, but no final solution was reached.
One of the questions was whether to use live feed or still images. Whereas live feed allows for immediate feed-back, which is very playful but possibly a bit too centred around just the one current person playing, still pictures may show (as Martin pointed out) the diversity, and/or recent activity of visitors. As I believe the interaction should be concentrated on the harp and not on the camera, pictures could be shot automatically, at pre-set intervals. In this case sound may be a strong indicator as to when then photo is about to be taken/ when it 'shoots'. Mosse showed us a good example the other day with ‘The Origin of Painting’. We may of course consider a less nerve wrecking sound. :)

Suggestions for how to visualise the out-put from the camera as well as the harp; the thin dashed lines represent the harp strings, while the kaleidoscopic 'flowers' (one on each string) originate from different stills from the camera in-put, and change look/ shape when the string they 'grow on' is interacted with/ played on.



















In the following suggestions the various 'flowers' all animate on the same live video in-put, and change upon interaction by either spinning (left) or increasing and then decreasing in size (right).

On the right the strings consist solely of flowers, from tiny to large, and changing size with 'string activity'. This increased number of kaleidoscpes may however prove a bit much to process.

Invitation-inspiration


"Individual" invitation-flyer : could easily be done with professing-kaleideoscopes and our dear friends up at allkopi, if not plotted.. 
250 g. paper size A4 would be about 6.25 nok (included taxes.) Any feelings anyone?

These are taken from an ad for Nike by BUCK that we watched the other day, and I thought everyone should see this alternative way of playing with the picture in-put. Maybe some harp strings could distort in the regular kaleidoscopic fashion, while others do it vertically or horisontally?

Keepon Dancing

I'm not suggesting we start dabbling with robot technology for our exhibition, but since the little Keepon robot sparked such an interest yesterday, I thought I'd just archive some info about it here.

One of the questions raised was: "How on earth does this thing work? Does it actually sense its surroundings, or is it just a glorified 90's Dancing Coke Can?"

The Infanoid Project says:
Keepon has a yellow snowman-like body. The upper part (the "head") has two eyes, each of which is a color CCD camera with a wide-angle lens (120 degrees horizontally), and a nose, which is actually a microphone. The lower part (the "belly") has a small gimbal and four wires, by which the body is manipulated like a marionette; four motors and two circuit boards (a PID controller and a motor driver) are installed in the black cylinder. Since the body is made of silicone rubber and its inside is relatively hollow, Keepon's head and belly deform whenever it changes posture and when someone touches it. (more + pics)
Neat touch to actually place the cameras in its eyes and letting it "smell" sound! Still, the most important thing may be observing just how alive this thing seems, despite looking like a pair of tennis balls. One can communicate emotion with very simple means. (Eureka!)
